#1 Wrap a present in pretty wrapping paper. Inside on a piece of paper have "MY LIFE" written. Explain that inside this present is the most precious of all gifts. You can't buy this gift. And, each one of us has this gift. Tell the children to listen as you sing a song, and see if they can guess what the gift is. **idea - instead of singing a solo (I always hesitate because I don't have the best voice...perhaps consider asking the Merry Miss girls to sing this song as a group to introduce it to the group.)

#2 In the Sharing Time outline, they already suggest having the person teaching sharing time lesson #1 use the words: WHO, WHERE, WHY, WHAT. To relate these words to this song. Ask questions such as:

"WHO gave you this gift?" (Heavenly Father),

"WHERE did your life begin?" (Heaven),

"WHO made a choice to come to this lovely home on earth?" (We all did!),

"WHAT are you seeking?" (God's Light),

"WHY will you work, and pray, and walk in His way?" (To be happy)

#3 Pick out some of the key words for this song.

Such as: GIFT, PLAN, PURPOSE, HEAVEN, LOVELY HOME, SEEK, I WILL FOLLOW, LOVE, WORK, PRAY, WALK, HAPPY, HOME ABOVE.

Pick a child to come up and help you.

Have the key words in no particular order using magnets or tape on the chalkboard area. As you sing the song through, see how many key words the child can get in the right order. This is a great way to keep singing the song over and over. Just keep picking volunteers until the words are in the right order. The primary kids won't realize they've just sung the song 10 times. :)

#4 Don't forget the blobs once they're on week 3 or 4! Since it is February, use heart shaped blobs. They always love blobs. Don't know what I'm talking about by "blobs?" We use them to cover the poster little by little to encourage memorization. Let the kids who are singing their best choose where to place the blob on your poster board visual. Link here: BLOBS

I changed the iadea given in the manual just a bit.
We discussed different ways we can 'follow' Jesus to introduce this song.
We discussed attributes that Jesus had, and how we can become more like him.
I wrote their answers on a footpring.
I think picked 2 to use on our visual poster board...

1. In a very quiet voice, tell the children that they need to listen carefully and then echo back to you everything that you sing. Sing "When Christ was on the earth" (children echo back). Continue doing this echo game to teach the 1st verse. Explain that the Holy Ghost doesn't speak to us like we speak to our friends. Explain that the Holy Ghost usually speaks with more of a 'feeling'. And, we have to listen very carefully to hear or feel it.

2. Bring a well used baby blanket. Show the blanket and ask the children if any of them had a special blanket when they were younger. Ask them if they needed it when it was time for bed? Or, if they were sad, would they snuggle up to their blanket? Explain that your blanket was wonderful because it COMFORTED you. It made you feel comfortable inside. Explain that the Holy Ghost is kind of like that blanket. The Holy Ghost is there to help us when we are feeling badly, or if we need help, or just to help us feel that things will be ok.

3. As you get up to the front, very quietly whisper,

"If you can hear me fold your arms."

"Everyone who can hear my quiet voice, crinkle your nose."

(even quieter) "If you can hear me ____"

Explain that even though you were speaking very very quietly, when they listened, they could hear and obey your instructions. Tell them that you are going to sing a song about someone who has a still small voice and who tells our hearts and minds important things.

4. Begin by asking the children who the members of our Godhead are.

Explain that there are 3 seperate beings. Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost.

Tell them we are going to learn about the 3rd member - the Holy Ghost.

I liked this article about the Holy Ghost, and explaining how he doesn't have a body of flesh and bone, therefore he can dwell with us at all times. He can be our CONSTANT companion.

Ask if they know what the word "constant" means. Have your pianist play "The Holy Ghost" and as he/she plays, clap the rhythm. Ask the children to join in clapping the rhythm with you. Try it again, this time, you sing the melody and clap with the children. Explain that just as the 'beat' in this song is constant, the Holy Ghost can be our constant companion. He will stay with you, unless you are making bad choices.

Then, you might want to focus on a different song out of the Children's Songbook for your Theme Song.

Sorry this is late! We had General Conference, then we were out of town, and I had a hand injury...nonetheless...here it is now!

I think the ideas in the 2010 outline are awesome for this song:

1. Ask the children to STAND if they belong to a family.

Ask them to stand if they belong to other groups such as; a sports team, a club, a music group, and lastly a CHURCH.

Let the children explain to you you what belonging means.

(that you are an important part of something)

2. Make these word cards:

BELONG, KNOW, KNOW, FOLLOW, BELIEVE, HONOR, DO, FOLLOW, PROCLAIM.

Ask the children to listen to you sing 2 things that you KNOW because you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
{I KNOW who I am, I KNOW God's Plan}

Have them listen again to 6 things we DO because we belong to this church:

{FOLLOW him in faith, BELIEVE in the Savior Jesus Christ...etc}

Last word to hold up is BELONG.

Bear testimony that it is a privilege to BELONG to the true Church of Jesus Christ and that we have a responsibility to do the things we sing about in this song.

3. Divide the Primary into two groups.

Have one group sing the first two words of each phrase

(I belong, I know, etc)

Have the other group sing the rest of the phrase.

Change groups and repeat.

4. Show a picture of Jesus Christ.

Have the children read Doctrine and Covenants 115:4 together.

Discuss that "last days" also means "Latter-days."

When I was a little girl we sang a song, "I'm a Mormon, yes I am..."

Remember that song?

I wanted to focus on the fact that the 'nickname' for our church is Mormon, but the real name is

Discuss that there are many people that don't know "Mormons" are Christians.

These are 2 great videos about this idea that could be neat to incorporate in your teaching:

Part way through (about minute 6 is where it discusses our difference from other Christian churches, etc)

5. Role play a little.

Pretend one of the children in your primary is traveling alone on the airplane to visit their grandparents.

While on the plane, the person sitting next to them strikes up conversation.

They notice your Book of Mormon in your carry - on bag.

This person next to you asks you if you are a Mormon.

What would you say?

They ask you, what do Mormon's believe?

What would you say?

Or use the article from the 1998 October Friend as a reference, or read as a story:
We Believe...

6. Review the words in the song:

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (True name of our Church, not Mormon).

I Know who I am (Child of God)

I know God's Plan (premortal life, life after death)

I'll follow Him in Faith (baptism, keeping commandments, etc.)

I Believe in the Savior Jesus Christ (Christians, believe in the Bible and Book of Mormon)

I'll honor his name (Try to to what is right)

I'll do What is right (Choose the Right)

I'll follow His Light (live so the Holy Ghost can guide your actions)

His Truth I Will Proclaim (Be a missionary, and good example to all)

7. Just for fun:

Bring a missionary tag.
Have a picture of your meeting house.
Ask them to notice what name is stated on both.

While at Target, I spotted these headbands in the Dollar Spot bins.

They had them in yellow, purple, and pink.

When I saw them, I knew they'd be perfect for

"Little Purple Pansies"

I know...they aren't the 'shape' of a pansie, but it doesn't matter - for $1!

The nursery kids are going to LOVE wearing these and dancing around like little flowers...I already know.
Hurry to Target before they are gone!

My pianist had a cute idea -

The nursery kids always like to sing "Once there was a Snowman" even in the wrong season.

So, instead we tried this:

"Once there was a seed, seed, seed...

Once there was a seed - small, small, small.

In the sun he grew, grew, grew...

In the sun he grew - tall, tall, tall..."

So, it turned out to be the opposite of snowman, we ended up tall - the kids loved it!

Apostles and Prophets

I created a simple matching game for the quorum of the twelve, and the first presidency.

My intention was for younger children, therefore giving the apostles 1st name as a clue, with the last name being a fill in the blank.

I figured it could be a good review before Conference - to see how many of the apostles they can name.

Doesn't have to do much with singing...but perhaps FHE, or something...

Ideas to teach this song:
I think most primary's know this song. It's just one of those we all know. Therefore, instead of focusing on learning the melody, I think I'll focus more on the words for this song - memorization.

1. Use props or pictures to represent the prophets you'll be singing about. Such as:
ADAM - Big #1, or a plant
ENOCH - Arrow pointing up to heaven
NOAH - Ark, boat, 2 animals
ABRAHAM - #12 (for 12 tribes)
MOSES - a staff, or a 40 (for 40 years in wilderness)
SAMUEL -? hmm...hard one! :)
JONAH - Whale, running shoe
DANIEL - Lion
OR, using a Gospel Art Kit picture of each story is awesome too!

2. The chorus has some really important parts to it.
First: "Don't go astray"
Secondly: "He knows the way"
Help emphasize these words to the children.
You could start by singing the chorus very quietly, and gradually getting louder until the "Don't go astray." Then as you start singing the next part, start quietly again and grow louder until "He knows the way."

3. Our primary loves these hand actions.
When you begin the chorus:
"Follow the" - roll your arms
"Prophet" - snap fingers
"Don't go astray" - wag your pointer finger (as if scolding someone)
"He knows the way" - tap pointer finger to your temple (on your head)

4. Emphasize the rhyming words.
Each verse has them.
For example Adam:
First one that we KNOW.
In a place called Eden he helped things to GROW.
Adam served the Lord by following his WAYS.
We are his descendants in the latter DAYS.
Only way I can memorize these verses is if I remember the rhyming words. :)

Ideas to teach this song:

1. Have the group sing in "Question and Answer" groups.

Group 1: "How could the Father tell the world, of love and tenderness?"

Group 2: "He sent his son a newborn babe in peace and holiness...

You could divide teachers / children, or boys / girls, etc.

Idea in sharing time manual - I love it, but perhaps for subsequent weeks, not introduction week.

2. Print out the questions asked in the song on pieces of paper.

Sing the song once through for the children to hear.

Have a series of pictures to depict the answer to the questions.

Have the children help you match the question and an answer picture.

Then have them help you put the questions / pictures in the right order!

Some pictures I would use:

He sent his song a newborn babe... (above)

He sent his son to walk with men... (above)

He sent his son to die for us then rise with living breath (above)...

Have faith, have hope, live like His Son... (above)

3. Be sure to emphasize the last phrase.

"What does He ask? Live like His Son."

I think I am going to re-emphasize this phrase by focusing on it alone during week 2 or 3. Sharing time is supposed to focus on what Jesus has done for us. I think it leads perfectly into, "What can we do for our Heavenly Father and Jesus." I plan to bear testimony that I know my Savior loves me. That I am so grateful for the many things he did while on this earth. And, to show my gratitude, I want to do what my Heavenly Father has asked - Live Like His Son...and discuss the ways I can do this.

4. Have a "heart attack". Since it is February!
At Walmart and they have a package of 30 foam hearts in red, white, pink and dark red.
I'm thinking that I'll ask the kids to tell something they can do to show their LOVE for their Heavenly Father. To re-emphasize the "Live Like His Son".
Pass the hearts out to each child, as they come up with an idea - they share it, and then attack either:
ME with the hearts (tape them onto me)
OR
Attack our poster.
So, they'd work the same way as our 'blobs' in covering up the words on our poster.
They will love this idea...I already know. :)
(You could easily just cut out paper hearts for this)

Repetition Ideas

Fact of the matter is:

Kids learn by repetition

As much as they may not like the IDEA of singing the same song 10 times in a row...it's how they learn.

We are always changing up ways to sing the song, and really, the kids don't realize we're singing the song as many times as we are!

A FEW REPETITION IDEAS:

Mystery Box:
I keep a box full of random items / toys in the closet. Mine contains items like below, but be creative! Rummage through your toys at home - you'll be amazed what you'll find!

A toy car: sing "Vroom, vroom, etc" instead of words. Could also sing "Beep, beep" etc.
Heart: Sing lovingly.
Frog: Sing while hopping, OR sing staccato.
Pirate Eye Patch: Close your eyes while singing.
Hammer: Beat out the rythmn of the song as we sing.
Slinky: Loud when stretched out, softer when squished (idea in LDS sharing time outline...)
Spinning Top: Have them turn in slow circles while singing.
Block with #'s: I let 1 child roll the block, and whatever # it lands on, if you are that old...you sing. :)
Toy Soldier: Sing while marching

Headband Hero:

Invite 1 child to the front of the room. They get to wear our "sweatband" for the round. The sweatband has a piece of laminated paper stuck to it - mine is velcro'd, you could make your more permanent if you'd like. Depending on the song, choose 1 key word to write on the laminated area of the headband. The point is - everyone else EXCEPT the person wearing the headband can see this word. Begin singing the song. When you get to the word written - STOP! Don't sing it! The person wearing the headband has to guess which word comes next in the song. Sr. Primary loves this game. For Jr. Primary, I have the child wearing the headband cover his ears, while I tell the young kids that can't read the secret word. I then as we sing the word put a "shooshing" finger up to my lips to help them remember not to sing it. They do great.

Musical Note:

Have a musical note, or a CTR symbol or something that goes along with your lesson. Have 1 child leave the room, have another child hide this object. Invite the child who left the room back, and begin singing your song. As the child gets closer to the hidden object - sing louder. As the child moves away from the hidden object - sing quieter. Never gets old to the kids...

Sit and Stand:

Print out keywords for the song, words that are said more than once (preferably). Have one child pick a word our of your basket. As you sing the song, when that word is sung, everyone stands, then sits back down, and stands when word is sung again next. Could do many different ways. Instead of Stand/Sit, you could Clap on the keyword, or close your eyes on the key word, or fold your arms on the key word, etc. Depends how much energy you want them to get out, or how in control you need to keep them! :)

Notice, for most of these ideas, they need to pick your items / papers out of a container. Might I suggest making one? I reuse mine ALL the time. Icall mine the mystery can. It's simply a large metal can (that your food storage comes in), recovered with bright fun colors and question marks all over it. They never know what's inside, or what the things inside are for! :)

I keep in the closet, I never have to stress about what to use...

**Sometimes we sing ONLY the chorus, or only the 2nd verse, etc.

Also, sometimes we are humming just the melody, which is so great to really get the melody ingrained in their memory.

Singing Idea

I came up with this and the kids absolutely loved it. I created a word search as a game for choosing which song to sing. I used words instead of the whole song title, so I put in 'Child' for I am a child of God and 'Prayer' for A child's prayer, or 'Walk' for I'll walk with you... I also put in the names of all the children (we have a relatively small group) and if they found a name then that child got to choose their favourite song to sing... It worked really well. We could have gone on for hours :o)

For me - the simpler, the better.

I think the idea given in the sharing time outline will work well for week 1 for our primary. It always takes time to get the kids settled in their new classes, etc.

Since the song starts with "A long time ago..." it just sounds like a story. I plan to do just as the outline says, and tell the story of Jesus Christ visiting and teaching the Nephite children. I think the idea of letting the children pick an action to go with each line of the song is great...

I plan on testifying to the children how I haven't ever seen Jesus, yet I know he is real.

And discussing the principle of Faith.

The 1st article of Faith (January theme) -

We Believe in God the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ...

Propose the question:

How do we know there is a Father in Heaven or a Jesus Christ if we've never seen them?

Wait for their answers.

Let them share their ideas.

Let them ponder the idea.

Share your testimony with the children, how you know Jesus is real, even though you've never SEEN him...and sing the song for them:

...The love that he felt for his little ones, I know he feels for me.

I did not touch him or sit on his knee,

YET, Jesus is REAL to me...

I Know He Lives! I will follow faithfully.

My heart I give to Him. I know that My Savior Loves Me.

In a previous week - I had each child write their favorite primary song on a piece of paper.

I use this collection for a fun game at the end of the year.

I keep it SUPER SIMPLE because we all know how busy it gets with Christmas and New Years.

I tally up the songs, and create a Top 10 songs for 2009.
We then start with #10 and work our way up to #1.

I let the children choose either charades OR pictionary.

Some kids aren't comfortable acting, others aren't comfortable drawing.

The kids love it.

So, after they guess the #10 song, sing it, and invite another child up to act out #9, sing, etc.

Takes a good 20 minutes to get through them all.

The surprise to me was that the kids #1 choice (in my ward) was "I Am a Child of God".

Poster Night

"Last year, my presidency and I bought your 2009 song kit, including the vinyl lettering. We then invited a few members from our primary to come help us. We made some fun munch food, we divided up the songs, and went to work! Within an hours time, we had all the posters for our singing time completed and ready to use! It was fun, and easy, and we plan to do it again this year..."

Christmas Song

Our primary is usually asked to sing in the month of December, whether it be Sacrament Meeting, or a ward function. I wanted to try something new this year.

My husbands aunt wrote this beautiful song
"Christmas Anthem"

I cry every time I hear it.
It is that good.

This year, I invited the Young Women in our ward to help us.
The primary will sing the 1st verse.
The Young Women will sing the 2nd verse.
We both sing the chorus together, and then what is so fun about this song, is they sing the 1st and 2nd verses at the same time in a duet.

It is so beautiful.

I am working on getting a soundbite up of the song.
Until then, here is the 1st page of the sheet music...to hopefully give you a feel for the song.

Attention Getter...

I have a hard time getting the kids to watch my hands while directing. While practicing for our program, I don't even know how many times we had to practice standing at the same time.

It gave me an idea:

I got a pair of cheapy cotton gloves (choose an obnoxiously bright color if they have it)
I hot glued some "warm fuzzies" to the ends of the fingertips, in all different colors.

All I had to do, was wiggle my fingers up in the air to get their attention...and it worked! They could stand as a group!!

I didn't wear them for the program, but it sure helped during our 'prep' time, so I thought I'd pass along the idea...for next year... :)

Program Idea

We are still preparing for our program. One of the songs we are singing is "I Love to See the Temple". I had an idea this week that I wanted to try at church today. It was so wonderful, it gave me goosebumps. I thought I would pass along the idea to you.

Think of a 'wave' at a football game.

I start on one end of the room. A few children help me sing, "I love to see the temple."
* a very small piano interlude (to pause it a bit)
More kids join along with the first group and sing, "I'm going there some day."
* small piano interlude (arpeggio)
More kids join, "To feel the holy spirit."
* piano again
More kids join, "To listen and to pray."

By this point our whole primary is singing for the chorus and the remainder of the song. I am having the organ join in for the chorus. The congregation will be joining us on the 2nd verse as our closing song for the program.

It was just wonderful. The growing voices is beautiful. I didn't divide them by classes, instead just in sections. This way, I could slowly walk in front of the group and encourage the next group to help us. They loved it. We leaders loved it. I hope you love it. :)

Follow the Prophet

At some point this month, since we are discussing

"Prophets teach me how to strengthen my family"

you might want these.

I think my junior primary especially will love having a turn to hold up the prophet as we sing, "Follow the Prophet". I plan on mounting them on sturdy paper, and writing their name a little larger so all can see it from the back of the room, and attaching a popsicle stick.

It could be fun to also have these all in a bag, and to pull 1 out at a time and sing the verse about that specific prophet!

The Music Measles

I bought a package of tiny red dot stickers and put them all over myself and the presidency members. I explained to the children that music is contagious, like when we hear a catchy tune.

I also told them that music has a way of making us happy, and that happiness is also contagious. Well, the music measles are contagious too.

They "caught" the music measles by singing.

The music measles were something they wanted to catch.

As they sang, we placed our stickers on them.

They had fun seeing who had the most spots.

I was at "Family Dollar" today.

They had some big foam dice.

2 for $1.

{I love all a dollar}

I've been using a homemade paper dice for my dice game.

It worked fine, but it gets crunched sometimes.

I was excited for this alternative.

I plan to put fun ways to sing on one of the dice:

Girls Only, Boys Only, Teachers Only, Stand Up

Slow, Super Fast, Hum, Close Eyes, Clap, Hop, etc.

Then, on the other dice, I am going to do theme songs:

Below are my clipart / clues for our songs. The dice only had 6 sides (obviously), so I picked the 6 we needed to practice most. And, I just taped them on the dice for temporary, whereas I modge podged on my other dice.

I haven't pulled this out in a while -

HEADBAND HERO!

Always a favorite.

I normally print out the words and put felt on the back that sticks to the velcro on my headband / sweatband. When I originally created the game, I tried to use generic words that appear in lots of songs, which worked fine.

Well, a wonderful reader suggested a new way. She laminates a plain white piece of paper. Since it is laminated, and large, and permanently attached to her headband, she simply uses a dry erase marker to write the new word on the headband! Erases easily for her to write the next word for the next child. I love this. I am going to make a new headband using this idea.

Cheap and seriously one of their most favorite games.

Ideas to introduce / teach song:

1. Make word strips using only the first letter for each word. For example IHAFHOE (I have a family here on earth). Sing the first section of the song and have the children put the wordstrips in order as you go. I like this idea, but I don't love it. I teach the articles of faith this way, and it's great for the older kids, but juniors struggle. So, if it works for your primary - wonderful. Idea taken from Ensign 2009

2. Use the "How" "Why" When" cards. I like to sing the song first for them and then have them help me answer the questions with my cards. As I've said before, make some good copies of these cards - I use them often...

Where is your family? {Here on earth}

What do you want to do with your family? {Share my life with them through all eternity}

How long can families be together? {Forever}

Who makes it possible for us to be together forever? { Heavenly Father} His plan is for us to come to earth and live as a family.

What has the Lord shown me? {How I can always be with my own Family}

3. Focus on the temple. The meaning of the song is that through blessings of the temple, families can be together forever. Perhaps make a large puzzle of a temple. Discuss different ways that help us prepare to go to the temple. As the children come up with a good idea, let them place a piece of the puzzle - to eventually create a temple.

4. Fill a large jar full of sand. (I recently went on a trip to the beach, so this could be fun for my kids that knew I was on vacation.) Show the jar filled with sand to the primary. Ask them how many grains of sand they think are in this jar? Ask them to imagine how many grains of sand are on all the beaches in the WHOLE world. If every grain represented 1 year, eternity would still be longer. It goes forever! Tell the children you are going to sing them a song about eternity, and see if they can discover who can be together forever. Sing just the chorus if you'd feel more comfortable. BE SENSITIVE: Explain that Heavenly Father loves all people. He loves those who have not been to the temple as much as those who have. He wants all families will be sealed in the temple. Explain that many families have not yet been sealed in the temple. However, these families can go to the temple if they prepare themselves properly. Tell the children that they can live worthy so that when they are married they can go to the temple to be sealed and start their own eternal families.

I'd really like to talk / sing about the Pioneers this Sunday.

But, I also see the importance of discussing keeping the Sabbath Day Holy.

THEREFORE:

My wonderful primary leader and I are combining efforts for this sharing time.

There was a fun idea on The Crazy Chorister using a pioneer trail.

I think we'll incorporate that idea somehow.

ADDITIONAL IDEA:

I was able to borrow a couple of pioneer dresses. My primary leader in charge of sharing time and I are going to wear these. To begin sharing time, we will be outside the primary room. Our pianist will begin playing "To Be a Pioneer", and we'll enter and sing the song (with descant for 2nd verse). I think it will be a nice touch, and grab their attention and help us lead right into our sharing time about pioneers. :)

This weeks sharing time topic is: "I can strengthen my family by reading the scriptures."

Here is a list of our theme songs (plus my 2 free choice songs) and a corresponding scripture:

For junior sharing time - Let some of the older kids help me read each scripture, then we'll discuss the hard words, and decide which theme song it corresponds with and sing.

Could do this same idea for next week which is "I can strengthen my family through Family Home Evening." Play this scripture search with your family!

Song Review Idea:

5 + glasses of water (however many songs you need to review)
1 glass full of vinegar (save the vinegar for last)
1 spoon for each glass of liquid
food coloring
baking soda
1 cookie sheet (under glass with vinegar)

On each spoon place a small amount of food coloring (different color for each spoon).

On top of each drop of food coloring place the baking soda - so that you can't see that food coloring is on the spoon.

Invite a reverent child up as your first volunteer. They simply place the spoon in the glass of water, and mix - and wala! A magical color appears! The children then look over at your chart stating which song goes with the corresponding color. Sing that song.

Repeat...repeat...repeat...

The last cup is full of vinegar instead of water. The kids will go crazy as the spoon is dipped in the cup, and not only does a color appear, but the cup overflows with foam! Perhaps this last color is a 'choose your favorite' or something fun.

JUNE: Seek the Lord Early

IDEA #1: (taken from the June 2009 Friend)
Make eight wordstrips: youth, truth, there, prayer, obey, say, abound, found. Post them in random order on the board. Tell the children that each sentence in the song has two words that rhyme. Sing the first sentence to the children. Have them listen for the word that rhymes with “youth” (truth). Put those two wordstrips next to each other on the board. Sing the first sentence together. Continue this pattern with the rest of the sentences. Next, display pictures that correspond to concepts in the song. As you sing each phrase, ask a child to choose what picture could go with the sentence. When all the pictures have been chosen, invite the children with the pictures to stand at the front of the room and raise their pictures when their phrase is sung. Sing the whole song together.

IDEA #2: (taken and combined from various friend articles)
Hide a set of scriptures somewhere in the room. Tell the children that there is an item that is very important - that will help them get closer to their Heavenly Father. They can only find it by staying in their seats and asking 'yes' or 'no' questions. (E.g., “Is it higher than your head?” “Is it under someone’s chair?”)

When they have “found” it, pick a verse to read to them (possibly Revelations 3:20). Remind them that Jesus wants you to hear His voice and feel His spirit. He loves you and wants you to feel that love. He wants to bless you. He wants you to understand what things will bring you happiness and make it possible for you to live with Him and your Father in Heaven forever.
As you search the scriptures to understand and know what you should do, you will hear His voice. This “hearing” is often a feeling that comes into your mind and your heart. If you read the scriptures with faith, desiring to believe and seeking to understand, you do more than just read words. You open a door and invite the Spirit of the Lord into your heart and mind. You will want to do what is right. You will feel the love of the Savior. His words will bless you. The scriptures will tell you all the things that you should do. Studying them will bring you closer to Him.

IDEA #3:
Help the children learn the difficult words in the song:
"Seek": Play a mini game of 'hide and seek' to demonstrate. "seek" means to find. Make sure the children understand that Heavenly Father isn't lost. Instead, we are trying to feel close to him, and feel his love.
"Youth": Perhaps have a teacher stand and a young child stand. Which is 'in their youth?" :)
"Fervent": Means with lots of feeling, earnest, meaningful.
"Abound": This means that He loves us so much, his love will surround us.

Encourage the children to "Seek the Lord Early" while they are young. Encourage them to gain a testimony of their Heavenly Father by; searching the scriptures, fervent prayer, following the prophet and keeping the commandments. If they do this, "He will be found".

A church mouse:

$1.49 at Ikea in the childrens toy section.

Idea #1: I love it when the children come to primary, we hum along with the prelude music. Sometimes, they are too loud, and it doesn't work. I think this mouse would do the trick! The first week, have the mouse near the podium, as a reminder to the children when they come into primary they need to be reverent and quiet or it scares away our 'church mouse'. After they get the idea of the church mouse - perhaps have it hidden in different locations each sunday, and as they reverently sit in their seats and hum, they can look around the room to see if they can spot it!

Idea #2: I often use a picture of a mouse to have the children sing 'quieter', and a picture of a lion to encourage them to sing 'louder'. I already had a lion puppet, but didn't have a mouse!

Silly Birthday Hat:

"Be Guided"

Our sharing time was focused on following the promptings of the Holy Ghost to make the right choices. For the singing part of this, I chose to play a fun game.

WHAT YOU NEED:
A small CTR shield (attached at bottom of post).

WHAT YOU DO:
1 child goes out of the room, while one child hides the CTR shield. The rest of the primary are our singers.

We then sang "Baptism" (we needed some review...) and as the 'seeker' would get closer to the hidden CTR we'd sing LOUDER. As they moved away from it, we'd sing QUIETER. The kids loved it. They didn't even notice that we sang "Baptism" at least 10 times through. :) And, I was able to tie it in to the listening to the Holy Ghost - if we listen, we will be guided which choices to make.

Ideas for teaching:

Idea #1:

Discuss with the children the 4th Article of Faith (which you should've reviewed last month)

We Believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are 1st - Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ 2nd - Repentance 3rd - Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins 4th - Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Sing the 1st verse of the song Baptism, and ask the children to listen carefully to which 'ordinance' (you just discussed in the 4th article of Faith) you are singing about. (3rd Baptism by immersion)

Idea #2:

I'm a fan of the "Who" "Where" "When" "How" "Why" cards that I mentioned in previous songs. It gets the children thinking, and listening. Perhaps consider making a set of cards, laminated to use often when teaching new songs. When using these cards, when applicable, have a picture to go along with them. Let the children match the "Who" with a picture of Jesus. "Where" with the "River Jordan or Judeah", etc.

KEEP IT SIMPLE.

There's no need for tons of visuals, or games, or fillers. Teach with the spirit, and involve the children using appropriate materials.

Helping a Family in Need:

There is a sweet family in my ward that lost their father this week in a tragic car accident. He leaves behind a wife and 6 children. Their 3 youngest are in the primary where I am the singing leader. Nursery Age Music

Music with the nursery age children can be so fun! If you are in a building that allows you (the singing leader) to bring the nursery children into the primary room for singing time - do. It helps their transition into sunbeams so much easier.

In our nursery, all the kids hold onto a 'rope' and walk into the primary room.

Here are some ideas our nursery kids love:

MUSIC MAKERS:

I have a bright orange bag, full of noise makers (none that use the mouth of course). Sometimes we march around the room singing "Do as I'm Doing", or we sit in our chairs and use them while singing "Singing a Song is Fun to Do". I bought a set at Ikea, and I made some instruments. There are a lot of good websites that offer shakers, castanets, tambourines, etc. I homemade some with simple items like pie tins, paper cups, rice, beans, wood blocks, sand paper, etc. The love them all.

SONG CLUES:

I have a tin can that I covered with fun paper. Inside this can are 'clues' for which song we will sing next. If it were up to me, I'd forget and we'd sing the same songs everyweek! The children love to be involved, and this keeps them from shouting out which song to do next.

When teaching this song, it's important that you sing all 3 verses. Otherwise it doesn't get the entire message to the children. We designed our visual with 2 different colors for the words. This makes it so that you can divide the primary into 2 groups. Have the one group sing the 'questions' and the other group sing the 'answers'. If your teachers are willing, I really like to have my primary teachers sing the questions, and all the children sing the answers.

For example:

Group 1: "Did Jesus really live again?"
Group 2: "Yes, when the third day came. He wakened and he left the tomb, He called Mary's name."

Group 1: "Did Jesus come to those He loved?"
Group 2: "Yes, people touched His feet, and of the fish and honeycomb, He did truly eat."

Group 2: "and there were nailprints in his hands and a spearwound in his side."
Group 1: "Did Jesus really live again after he had died?"

EVERYONE:
"Yes, and so shall I"

A FAVORITE!

Draw a large tic-tac-toe board on the chalkboard. Use our large laminated X’s and O’s.

Divide into 2 teams, (boys vs girls, teachers vs. kids, etc.) Middle square is the “theme song” for the month. To get a turn to place their teams X or O, the team must correctly answer a question about a song. Once they are correct, the primary sings the corresponding song, and that team gets to put their X (or 0) in a square. OR, play 'name that tune' instead of asking questions - better for jr. primary.

Blobs

I use these throughout the month on the new song we are learning. The first week, my poster is 100% visible. Then, when we practice the theme song in subsequent weeks, we use the blobs. I pick 1 child at a time to place a blob anywhere they'd like on the poster. Sometimes I do 1 blob the first week, add another blob the next week. Other times, we do them all on the same day!

blobs are:

The kids love them and it helps us memorize the songs. I use sticky tack to hold the blobs on the poster. The sticky tack doesn't harm my posters or blobs!

My Eternal Family

I came across Sofia's website which had some very cute ideas for teaching "My Eternal Family".

As sharing time began, I came to the front of the room dressed as a builder with tool belt, and hard hat. I said, "I am a builder." "Do you know what I build?" (children - houses!). "Nope. I don't just build houses, I build - HOMES." "Do you know who I build homes for?" (children - families!). "Not just families, but ETERNAL families."

I then proceeded to pick one child at a time to pick a tool out of my tool belt. We then discussed how each tool helps build an 'eternal family'. Some were a little of a stretch, but it was fun, and got the point across. Some of the tools I included:

1. Scriptures - It's how I feed my eternal family
2. Safety Goggles - Helps us to only watch things that are good, avoid bad things on TV / internet.
3. Sand Paper - Helps me forgive when others make mistakes.
4. Ear plugs - Helps me (us) avoid hearing bad language, gossip, etc.
5. Knee Pad - because I'm always on my knees in prayer for my 'eternal family'.
6. Hard Hat - protects my thoughts to keep them clean.
7. Tape Measure - So I can measure how much we are growing physically AND spiritually.
8. Lip Gloss - Reminds us to speak kind words to one another.
etc.

It was a great way to remind about the good qualities of being an 'eternal family'.

IDEAS FOR FOLLOW-UP WEEKS:

Since I have now introduced the song, I plan on a few fun ways to review / sing it:
1. Let them beat out the rhythmn like they are hammering.
2. My "headband hero" game. (explained on my website - always a good way to review)
3. I will still bring my hardhat each week, and perhaps the class who is singing the best, their teacher will wear the hat during sharing time.
4. Construction signs for singing. "STOP", "GO", "SLOW". The kids love to be incharge of these and be in charge of when we are singing. I thought they were very cute with the builder hat on the volunteer child. (click on image to enlarge, then right click 'save as' and save to your computer and print!).

My Eternal Family

I've seen a lot of ideas on how to teach this song. Although I am not opposed to 'clipart', I don't want to use 'Bob the Builder' in primary. That said, here is what I came up with.

(The first week I will only be teaching verse 1 and the chorus.)

Items Needed:

Construction Hat (picture above)

Pictures to go along with singing (See below)

Melody Dots (attached at bottom, large enough to click and save as)

Before primary, have your pictures set in a random order near the front of the room. Attached to each picture have the 'melody dots'. You do not need to know how to read music to use these - the children love them. It is easier than them trying to follow a leaders hand up/down/middle, etc.

Leader Sing: "I am a builder working each day to build my family". Invite a child to come up and wear the construction hat. He is our 'builder'. He needs to pick the picture that best matches the singing line. (A family). Have the primary children then sing the line.

Leader Sing: "And I will do the best I can do serve them lovingly". Again, invite a child up to wear the construction hat and find the appropriate picture. (Family helping do the dishes). Have the children sing the song up to this point.

Leader Sing: "I am a builder growing so tall, learning every day." Invite child to help find the right picture (children reading scriptures). Sing song to this point.

Leader Sing: "To speak with kindness in my home, to help at work and play." Choose reverent child to be your helper and find picture (children playing and sharing). Sing song to this point.

Leader sing the chorus: "My Heavenly Father sent me here, He knows I can be Strong and Righteous as I build My Eternal Family." (Picture of family in front of temple, or church). Repeat chorus with children.

Sing song from beginning to end.

(Repeat idea for 2nd verse next week.)

Teaching Tip: Popsicle Sticks

Another volunteer equality tip!

I am the new singing leader, and I have 2 boys in primary. After the 1st week I knew I was in trouble because I felt bad not knowing who to pick (and keep it fair). I've seen these before (as have you), but I thought it was still cute. Each child gets their name on a popsicle stick (color coated for Jr/Sr Sharing time), and when they've been picked, it stays upside down until everyone has had a turn. It will take a few weeks to get through the stash.

Teaching Tip: Gumball Machine

This idea was given to me by my friend and it is a hit with the kids! I use it throughout the year.

You draw a large gumball machine on poster board and title it (I "Chews" the Right!). Then you cut out as many small circles (gumballs) as there are children and then several more for move-ins. Cut out from colored paper that is bubble gum colors. A circle punch works very well. I used 1 3/4". Put one child's name on each circle. Seperate the circles in Jr. and Sr. primary and put in bags. When I need a child to be a helper I pick out of the bag. The child gets to come up and tape it onto my bubble gum machine poster board and then be my helper. This way everyone gets a turn eventually. (It takes about three to four weeks to get through all the names.) When they are done being a helper they get to take a real penny from my penny jar. After church they can come back to get a piece of real gum from my real bubble gum machine. (I bought mine from Target for $15)

I tell them, occasionally, that if I pick out a name and I can see they are talking or misbehaving/not singing etc. I will have to put their name back into the bag to draw out another time. I remind them subtly by saying as I'm drawing out a name, "I wonder if this person was singing/participating etc.?" The kids are quiet as a mouse as you draw out names - it works great and they LOVE getting a penny to put in my bubble gum machine.

**Discuss with your primary presidency to make sure you don't overlap ideas too much. (Idea taken from the February 2009 Sharing Time)

Introduce the song by singing the phrase "The wise man built his house upon the rock" ("The Wise Man and the Foolish Man," p. 281). Hold up a rock and ask: Why was the man wise to build his house upon a rock (a firm foundation)? Have a child hold the rock and a picture of Jesus Christ while you sing the first line of "How Firm a Foundation." Have the children repeat the line.

Sing: "ye saints of the Lord." Ask, who are 'ye saints of the Lord?' Then have them gather in a group and take a picture of the primary children to put on your poster to represent 'saints of the Lord." Have the children repeat the line.

On the board, write "faith in his ______ ___." Have the children listen for the words to put in the blanks while you sing the second line of the first verse. Have them sing the line. Ask: Where do we find His word (scriptures)? Invite a child to come up and hold scriptures. Have the children sing the lines you've learned so far.

Sing: "What more can he say than to you he hath said?" Add to the child's scriptures until he or she is holding all the standard works, church magazine, and pictures of modern prophets to show how abundantly the Lord has given us His word. Have the children sing this line.

Ask them to listen while you sing lines four and five for the word that is repeated three times. Define refuge (place of safety), and have the children sing lines four and five.

Bear testimony that Christ is a sure foundation and that if we are built upon His gospel, we shall not fall.
